Excise duty hike will make Karnataka most expensive state for spirits in India: ISWAI

Bengaluru, Jul 7 (IANS): The International Spirits and Wines Association of India (ISWAI) on Friday said that the excise rate hike in the Karnataka Budget 2023, presented by CM Siddaramaiah, will make the state most expensive for spirits in India.

ISWAI CEO Nita Kapoor said that "the 20 per cent excise duty increase on IMFL will make Karnataka ‘THE’ most expensive state for spirits in India. The state share of taxes at 80 per cent of MRP has restricted the growth of premium brands in the state. This move will result in a further decline of premiumisation in Karnataka and proliferate informal supply chains where people will buy from neighbouring states."

The ISWAI urged the state to rationalise AED, thereby reducing the MRP of premium brands in line with its neighbouring states, the statement said.

As per the state budget, additional excise duty on Indian-Made Liquor (IML) will be increased by 20 per cent on all 18 slabs. Additional excise duty on beer will be increased from 175 per cent to 185 per cent.

However, the state government said that even after the increase in excise rates, the price of liquor in the state would be lower compared to the neighbouring states.

All politicians are hand in gloves when it comes to increasing taxes. They are just extracting the honey for their splurge. They enjoy the fruits of our vote at our expenses. It does not matter which party is in power, they all invariably indulge in this.

Dear Mansoor, Udupi If it is bad for health, just like cigarettes, why not ban them? How increasing Government revenue on them will promote health of the people? Drugs are banned and so also prostitution. By same logic, Government should lift ban on them and derive profit from it too? Government has just increased corpus for corruption which is rampant, and it will only increase with the increased corpus.

Worth a Dharna.

Actually people should stop drinking thereby the government will reduce tax. But people will go for cheaper brands and spoil their lives faster than before.

If not possible to stop drinking people should at least reduce their quota. Also serving liquor at weddings and other functions should be stopped. Let the hosts too understand that guests don’t attend functions for the sake of drinks.

If liquor is banned drug peddlers will have a heyday. Sleeper cells involved in narcotics will thrive all over the state.

I think in Karnataka, 1) All beer, alcohol, whiskey, wine and other hot drink shops will not be having businesses from August 1st onwards. 2) All BJP MLA's will sit in dharna at all district head quarters. 3) All VHP, BD, HMS, HJV will protest sit in dharna till the taxes on hot drinks are rolled back. 4) All hot drink sellers will close their shops till the taxes on hot drinks is not rolled back. hAhAhA.....

Increase in the "SIN" tax is a cool way to balance the budget which will run into cores of deficit to compensate Congress freebees to women. I think women should take time off and hop into a bus if the husband does not reduce alcohol consumption unless she comes to his rescue with the other freebies, Budget strategies were well thought out before the election. Hope the Congress leaders do no get druk with power.
