Udupi, July 16: As many as 9.71 lac women travelled in KSRTC buses in the district by availing themselves of the Shakti scheme that ensures free travel for women in government buses. The transport corporation has earned an income of Rs 3.62 crore till July 14.
Udupi and Kundapura units of the KSRTC function in the district. There was an increase of 25% to 30% in the number of female passengers in Vegdhoot and ordinary transport buses after the Shakti scheme was introduced.
The Shakti scheme was launched on June 11. 1,00,838 women have travelled in government buses in Udupi unit that has helped in generating a revenue of Rs 14,70,793, 94,998 women took to Vegdhoot buses with a revenue of Rs 74,09,003 and 40,232 travelled in ordinary buses with a revenue of 7,94,933 in Udupi unit till June 30.
In Kundapura unit 71,410 women travelled in Vegdhoot buses that earned a revenue of Rs 63,25,419, 2,41,497 women in ordinary buses with an income of Rs 43,52,614. A total of 5,48,975 women travelled in the district and the corporation earned Rs 2,03,52,762 as income.
1,92,641 women travelled in Udupi unit till July 14 with an income of Rs 78,40,072. 2,29,557 women travelled in Kundapura unit with an income of Rs 80,88,362. 9.71 lac women have travelled since the scheme was launched that has helped the corporation earn an income of Rs 3.62 crore.
There is good response from women for the scheme in the district. The women and students have urged for increase in bus facilities in Kundapura taluk and other village areas. The scheme helps in the growth of self-employment and tourism.
The passengers in the government buses have helping in the corporation to earn profit that was earler incurring losses.
