Rahul Dravid to Quit ODI and Twenty20 Cricket After England Series

London, Aug 7 (IANS): Hours after the surprise recall to the India One-Day squad, Rahul Dravid Saturday announced his decision to quit the shorter versions of the game at the end of the series in England.

The highly dependable batsman with three hundreds in the last five Tests in the West Indies and in the ongoing series in England, said he was quitting the ODIs and Twenty20s so that he could concentrate on Test cricket.

Dravid, 38, who has not played much one-day cricket in the last four years after being dumped by the national selectors in the wake of a none-too-successful home series against Australia soon after the disastrous 2003 World Cup under his captaincy save for a brief return for the 2009 Champions Trophy in South Africa, admitted the latest recall was totally unexpected.

"Since I had not been picked for one-day cricket for the last two years, I was obviously a little surprised," he said after the warm-up game at Northampton.

"To be honest, I had not informed the selectors or the board of my intention to focus only on Test cricket because I had not been picked."

"Now that I am in the one-day side, I am committed as always to give my best in this ODI series against England and thereafter the Tests I play."

Dravid, like his teammate Sachin Tendulkar, has over 10,000 runs in both the Test and ODI cricket, with 10,765 runs in 339 one-dayers -- the seventh highest scorer in that format.

totally agree with Jude. Harish n saleem's comments r not jus stupid n ignorant but very very dumb....
Dravid, til date is the most selfless cricket ever. His bad luck is that wen eva he's weathered the storm n ground the opposition to dust, someone else wud walk in later n overshadowed him.....he was always a team man givin his 100% for the team n if he really was a ball sucker he wudn't have lasted 339 odis n scored 10000 runs. Wud sachin be willin to open the battin in tests for the team's cause? wud he keep wickets? in spite of evrythin, Dravid's colossal contributions r foolishly ignored by some Sachin worshippers....Don't forget tht der wer only two 300 runs partnerships ever in ODIs n RD figures in both of them. N in both matches he was the one in full flow right from the beginnin wen his partners took time to settle n later overshadowed him. if he was a ball sucker he cudn't achieve this feat. he was the highest run getter in 1999 WC. In 2003 WC if he din keep wickets n provide impetus to the battin at the end, India wud neva make it to finals. In 2007, he was the lone man puttin up a battle wen d grt SRT was whinin coz he was asked to bat in d middle. Please refresh ur memories before makin any blatant comments about RD. He's the unsung hero of Indian cricket....n deserves ever bit of respect

Absolutely stupid and ignorant comments by Harish & Saleem. Maybe they think cricket is a kutti dhonne game that is played in the backyard. The english conditions have exposed the rest of the team and Dravid's true worth. So guys just shut your trap. Just because a few of you pitiable guys dislike him, it does not mean that the millions of cricket fans across the globe will ever forget this greatest batsman of the modern era, who under the most trying circumstances has battled it out like a true warrior bringing fame to India. He is one of the key reasons why India is number one in tests today. Just read a bit of history during the two series against Australia palyed in India under Mark Taylor & Steve Waugh, where he went in first and ground the opposition to dust making it possible for the likes of Sachin to bask in glory later. With a little support from others like Sachin, in the team who look like mere passengers the story of the first two tests would have been different.

A true icon, has given his best to the cricket. I'm suprised to read the hate comments from the fellow indians, this shows how we belittle things. We just stand as spectators and comment on others. If we cannot achieve anything, then we have no right to judge the achiever. And DRAVID has fought the hard way and achieved. He is the success story of the indian cricket. Think of the times when Dravid has rescued indian team. Dravid you're a GEM, and its a good time for retirement in the shorter format of the game. But we wish to see you in the test cricket. Kudos! Dravid the wall of Indian cricket that never crumbles!!!! Hats off to u

Great respect for such a great batsman and such a great person. I dont want to comment on his test record, as he is the best. In context of limited overs, when we see RD, a slow striker image comes in our mind. I think it happens because he is so well in Test matches, that image doesnt overcome limited over match. As we consider Ganguly a great limited over batsman, there is hardly any difference between the strike rate of these two legend. And in T20s, you will find marginal diff between SRT and RD. During the wicket keeping phase, his strike rate was even marvellous. He even scored 50 in just 22 balls in one of ODI. Eventhough, he is not a natural hitter like Sehwag, Sachin and Yuvraj, he played the inning as per the games need. You can compare when he played at 1st down and as finisher(4th, 5th).Salute to this unsung hero...

Salute to this great gentleman and great servant of Indian Cricket. Rahul Dravid has given class performances day in and out in these last 15 years for his country. The way he has steadied the Indian batting ship under tough conditions overseas has been priceless.

RD took the right decision here. Nothing for him to prove anymore but he finds it necessary to concentrate on test cricket which is his forte.

Sachin has not played for records but since plays well records have followed him. Its this selfish ball sucker who playedselfishly for his recors making india loose many a one day matches fully knowing well that few nonesense followers will be there to suppoor that saying sachin played for records after seeing sachins fantastic records which helped india win many a series. If this charector was correct India could have won 1999, 2003 and 2007 world cups.

At last a good decision. He is not fit for shorter version of game today and that was why he was ignored. Today because yuvi is not there he is getting a chance. He should have quit long before as he can only be a good batsman in a low scoring one day match which rarely happen these days. The BCCI should immidiately change his inclusion in England one day team and throw him out straight away as for one dayers there are much more players waiting better than this kutlis and even non strike rotator. Earlier when sachin was in best of his forms this nonsense use to eat the first 60 balls in the 15 overs restriction allowing sachin only around 20 balls to face. Its not a slap on ors but a compliment. He should be kicked on his ass from England.

Thank GOD! Finally Dravid made his mind to quit from ODI's & T20's. This Indian ion Committee headed by Srikant is good for nothing. This ion puts a big question mark on Indian Talent, youngsters waiting into get into the National squad and above all India's reputation as one of the best team in the world!

I also feel that, Harbajan Singh also should retire from all forms of the game, otherwise our ion committe will have no guts to remove him from the team. I dont remember he has won any match for India with his brillient bowling performance in last 2 - 3 years leaving a couple of test matches. He is not god for ODI & T20's. However we can consider him for tests only when we play in India!
