Mangalore: Monsoon Weakens, but Heavy Rains in Isolated Places

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Aug 9: By and large, rain lost steam as compared to the previous week, on Monday August 8. However, places like Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala and Beltangady in Dakshina Kannada district and some places in Uttara Kannada district received heavy rains.

Puttur and Beltangady taluks received intermittent rains, while sunny weather was experienced in Mangalore taluk for most part of the day. A couple of areca nut plantations suffered damages due to landslides which washed away the fertilizers fed to the trees. The wall of a house belonging to Putti Shetty in Chantar village in Udupi taluk crashed, inflicting a damage of about Rs 15,000 on the family. No one was injured in the incident.

Fallen tree near Makkimane on Sringeri-Agumbe road created traffic bottlenecks, as a huge crater was created on the road at the spot where the tree stood, because of the roots that got pulled off as the tree fell. The officials worked with the help of a backhoe to provide a temporary road by the side of the crater to allow movement of vehicles.

Kumta in Uttara Kannada district, Lakkavalli in Shimoga district, and Bhagamandala in Kodagu district received the highest rain of nine cms each. Karnataka coast got an average rainfall of three to four cms, although Beltangady and Kollur registered eight cms of rain each.

The meteorological department has predicted heavy rains during the next two days, coupled with strong wind.
