Singapore: SingManGo celebrates Monthi Fest

Media Release

Singapore, Sep 26: On September 16, the SingMangGo community, a dynamic and closely-knit group comprising Mangalureans and Goans residing in Singapore, gathered with anticipation to celebrate the much-awaited Monthi Fest. This celebration marked not only a joyous occasion but also a testament to the enduring bonds of faith, family, and friendships within the SingMangGo community. With over 150 members, SingMangGo has evolved from a small gathering of 5 to 10 families into a thriving community that proudly showcases the cultural richness of Mangalore and Goa in Singapore.

The Monthi Fest celebration by the SingMangGo group provided a window into the essence of Mangalorean and Goan culture in Singapore, weaving a rich tapestry of traditions. It was indeed a beautiful fusion of faith and camaraderie. The stage for this special celebration was set with the statue of Infant Mother Mary beautifully decorated by Eugenie Monteiro, Kiran Saldanha and Merlie Pais. Traditional rituals, such as the honouring of Mother Mary with flowers by children and soul-stirring devotional hymns, created an atmosphere of deep spirituality. The inclusion of traditional dishes like 'vorn' prepared by Vinita Coutinho, Laveena Vaz, Vidya Lobo and Pratibha Saldanha and 'blessed novem,' brought by Rudolf Saldanha, was not just a culinary delight but also a symbol of gratitude for the blessings of nature and a bountiful harvest. The event exuded a sense of reverence and spiritual connection.

An ice-breaking session, skilfully managed by the MCs and their team, served as a bridge that brought the community closer together, fostering new friendships and strengthening existing ones. Every aspect of this celebration was infused with purpose and meaning - from the warm welcome by Noel Saldanha to the masterful guidance of Nasvill Pereira and Merlie Pais as the MCs for this event.

Beyond the traditional aspects, the evening was brimming with performances and activities supported by prizes sponsored by Gavin Gonsalves, Oscar D’Silva, Noel Saldanha, Rox D’Souza and Venita Martin that added to the festive spirit. Games orchestrated by Andrina Pais, Venita Martin, and Oscar D’Silva engaged the crowd in light-hearted fun.

The crowd was serenaded by enchanting duets, including Joel D’Souza and Heeru Fernandes's mesmerizing rendition of "Shallow" by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper, and Rhea & Ryan Martin's captivating performance of "A Million Dreams" from "The Greatest Showman". Joy Kevin Machado delivered a soulful Konkani song, “Mujhe Kaaliz Mogar Podla”, while Ian & Hayley Fernandes, “Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now”, showcased their exceptional talents. This was followed by a dance performance by Neha Menezes, Amita Prabhu, Karen Saldanha and sisters Divya Gomes and Deepti Serrao who danced to a medley of “What Jumka”, “Calm Down”, “Ya Ya MayaYa” and “Maria Pitache”.

The evening's standout moment came from a hilarious Konkani skit that was skilfully written, directed, and performed by Richard D'Souza, and ably supported by Brayan Cutinha and Anand Menezes. The atmosphere was brimming with laughter, showcasing the essence of unity and happiness that characterizes SingMangGo.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without delectable food, and SingMangGo ensured that the flavours of Mangalore and Goa took centre stage. Joel Saldanha and his culinary team from Pen & Inc, along with contributions of homemade dishes from the community, created a feast that not only satisfied the appetite but also nourished the soul. The pork bafat and sorpotel prepared by Ashok Serrao, Josephine D'Souza, Laveena Fernandes and Richard D’Souza were a hit.

The musical and dance performances were a fitting conclusion to the evening, with traditional baila and Indian tunes setting the stage ablaze. It was a reminder of the deep-seated love for music and dance that Mangaloreans and Goans share, transcending borders and generations. DJ Shalini Lobo supported by Aldon Lobo had the crowd grooving to popular Konkani, English and Bollywood tunes. Amid the festivities, SingMangGo managed to strike a delicate balance between solemnity and merriment.

The event was meticulously organized by a dedicated panel of volunteers who poured their time and effort into making it a resounding success. Their collective efforts and dedication together with support from Ayesha Pinto, Taneisha Monteiro, Juanita Roche, Shirley Menezes, Deexith D'Souza, Prashanth D'Souza, Alan Menezes, Clitus Fernandes, and Reuben Alvares ensured that the event was a memorable and joyous occasion for all. The evening’s highlights have been penned by Brayan and Deepika Cutinha for sharing with our global Daijis.

SingMangGo's Monthi Fest celebration in Singapore was more than just an event; it was a testament to the enduring spirit of the community. As they progress and adapt to changing times, their traditions, flavours, and celebrations stand as a shining symbol of cultural pride, unity, and harmony within the diverse fabric of Singapore's multicultural society.
