Onion prices marching towards Rs 100 per kilo

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Oct 31: The prices of onion has reached Rs 70 per kilo in the capital city and other important cities of the country. Though the union government began to sell onion which it has in stock at Rs 25 per kilo, in the open market the price is increasing steadily.

Yield of onion is reduced in onion growing areas due to scarcity of rain and floods. In addition, the rise in demand for onion after Navaratri festival resulted in the sudden hike in prices. The officials say that the price will be in upward trend and may reach Rs 100 in December.

The union government tried to control the price of onions from August till date by releasing 1.7 lac tonnes of onion it had in stock.

There is high chances of onion prices increasing in coming days. Import of onion from Maharashtra is reduced considerably. Yield of onion in Karnataka is very less due to scarcity of rain.

Our parents used to buy bulk, store and consume the onions throughout the monsoon........ that is consume over 4 to 6 months. During our childhood onions had a long shelf life..... Why not practice this; like buy when the prices are low, store and consume through rest of the year when the prices turn high
