Abortion racket: Probe reveals accused had aborted 3,000 female foetuses

Bengaluru, Nov 28 (IANS): The investigation into the foeticide scam that recently came to light in Bengaluru has led to shocking revelations as the accused told the police that they had aborted 3,000 female foetuses so far.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand told reporters on Tuesday that the investigations have shown that the accused had carried out 3,000 abortions so far and in the last three months itself, 242 female foetuses were killed.

The accused had set a target of 1,000 abortions per year to make money as they charged anywhere between Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 per termination of pregnancy.

The scam came to light when Byappanahalli police, on October 15, tried to stop a vehicle moving suspiciously. The vehicle’s driver did not stop and had to be chased by the police before being caught.

During interrogation the accused spilled the beans about the abortion racket. The police have arrested nine people till now, including two doctors and three lab technicians for their involvement in the nefarious activity.

Two of the arrested were also found to be involved in a kidnapping case, Commissioner Dayanand stated.

Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara has stated that the investigation into the case will be completed soon and everything will come out in the open.

The probe also revealed that abortions were conducted at a jaggery production unit in Mandya district where the accused had set up a lab and related facilities.

Mandya Assistant Commissioner Shivamurthy stated that the jaggery production unit has been seized as per the orders of the District Commissioner.

Investigation should involve medical experts and forensic team as there are many types of "maternal martality risks" while doing abortions especially in a clandestine setup! I, personally, opine this to be a very big racket involving interstate cartels who may have direct or indirect hand in this gory episode which could have been going on for a long time!! The above is a very personal opinion based on my perception; please do your own research and analysis before coming to any conclusions!!

My God ,900abortions means 900mords.My heart bleeds to this news.I know in Mumbai many abortions are taking place.in underground places. Many girls are coming from Gulf for this sake .But in mangalore too this business is going on in some remote area.I simply cant imagine how women or girls can do this without psychological effect and emotion. Some may suffer later when not done accordingly ,never again ble to have a child.Which condition they do there anyone knows? In a jaggery farm means?I am sure all these souls must have cried to Heaven for release.Let those souls rest in Peace.Punish them all who undertake and if possible who wants this illegaly for the sake of money.

@rita; this maybe just the tip of the iceberg! Also since some pregnant women are high risk for abortion, there definitely could have been many maternal fatalities???

Good and appreciated the parents decision. Evenif a girl child is born.....and she grows up, she is more prone to sexual harrassments/rapes/dowry issues/marital assaults etc...Our laws are too liberal. Rspists are not punished ...May all the fetuses rest in peace Amen.

The main accused doctor is said to be 'an ayurvedic doctor'. God only knows whether he is qualified. They must be informing all pregnant ladies that the foetus was female. They would have killed many male babies also.

OMG; THIS IS THE MOST CRUEL AND HORRENDOUS INCIDENT I HAVE EVER HEARD, THIS WILL SEND A VERY BIG NEGATIVE MESSAGE THE WORLD OVER; THIS KILLER SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY INTERROGATED AND THOSE IN HIS GANG SHOULD BE LEGALLY PINNED DOWN, AND THEIR INHUMANE CRIME OF ABORTING FETUSES SHOULD QUALIFY FOR A MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE! PLEASE NOTE THE ABOVE IS A VERY PERSONAL OPINION BASED ON MY PERCEPTION!!
