Udupi, Dec 12: During an interactive session with media personnel at Udupi Press Club on Tuesday December 12, superintendent of police (SP) Dr Arun K shared updates on various initiatives and challenges in the region.

Dr Arun mentioned that the district health officer (DHO) and food security officer (FSO) have undergone training to test for drugs in food items. “They have been instructed to conduct at least 50 random tests on food items sold near educational institutions. Additionally, police officials, responding to concerns raised by school and college management about alcohol consumption by students, have visited different educational institutions. Two drug peddlers in Manipal have been apprehended,” he said.

The SP also informed that the DHO and FSO are actively involved in testing food samples for drug content, and the agriculture and forest department is also participating in these efforts.

Addressing traffic issues in Udupi city, Dr Arun noted that the traffic police are occupied with the Belagavi session, making it challenging to deploy officers to every area. “A proposal for the installation of CCTV cameras has been submitted to the city municipality. Temporary CCTV cameras are requested for the Paryaya festival on a rental basis. The installation of permanent CCTV cameras may take two to three months due to procedural requirements. The identification of black spots and proposals for their rectification has been ongoing in road traffic meetings from 2019 to 2022. Measures to address overloading in auto-rickshaws, Omni vehicles, and buses are being enforced,” he said.

Providing an update on the Nejar quadruple murder case, Dr Arun informed that the investigation is in progress, with a pending forensic science laboratory report. The department is ensuring a thorough examination of the case within a reasonable time frame, he said.

The SP urged the public to report Matka trade and betting apps through nearby police stations, emphasizing that more than 2,200 cases of online fraud related to cybercrime have been registered in the last three years. Victims can call the toll-free number 1930 to file a complaint immediately after an incident, informed Dr Arun.

Regarding New Year celebrations, the SP mentioned that loudspeakers are not allowed after a certain time, and additional regulations are yet to be formulated.
