Mangalore: Relentless Rains Pose Further Problems

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 16: Both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts received heavy rains, intensity of which matched the rains usually witnessed during peak monsoon period. The rains which began on Wednesday continued through out the day and night on Thursday, into Friday morning.  Strong wind compounded problems of people living near the coast.

Rivers and rivulets have been overflowing, and village roads have suffered heavily. A fallen tree near Kundapur blocked traffic on national highway 66 for about six hours. Fishing activity could not be resumed on Thursday. Collapsed walls and fallen trees have been a common complaint at many places.

Udupi registered eight cm of rain, highest in the state. Other coastal regions registered rainfall of six to seven cm. The meteorological department has predicted heavy rains to continue till Saturday morning.
