Mangaluru, May 31: It is unfortunate to witness heaps of waste, such as plastic bottles, being dumped at the rejuvenated Kavoor lake.
Due to the monsoon, plastic bottles and other waste have gathered in large numbers at Kavoor lake. Despite the lake being a popular spot for walking, exercise, and leisure activities, it's disheartening to see people neglecting to keep the surroundings clean.
Despite the presence of dustbins, people continue to litter plastic bottles, and none of the elected representatives have taken the initiative to maintain the lake, despite its recent rejuvenation.
Environmentalist Bhuvan expressed concern, stating, "The lakes rejuvenated under the smart city initiative lack maintenance. They are constructed but not properly maintained. Rejuvenating a lake involves more than just construction. It should not include amenities such as parks and walking tracks to maintain its natural state."
Bhuvan also highlighted contamination issues in nearby wells, such as those near Kavoor lake and Bairady. "Even Gujjarakere lake faces contamination issues. People smoke and throw cigarette remains into the lake, which poses a danger to the water bodies," he added.
He emphasised the need for stricter measures, stating, "It should be restricted to the public and reserved solely for environmental purposes. We will appeal to the court regarding the neglect of unmaintained lakes. Health inspectors need to take action to impose fines on litterers, without being influenced by local corporators or elected representatives."
Bhuvan urged the government to fill vacant positions at the Pollution Control Board to ensure effective oversight.
