Mangaluru: Waste woes at rejuvenated Kavoor lake, park calls for action

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, May 31: It is unfortunate to witness heaps of waste, such as plastic bottles, being dumped at the rejuvenated Kavoor lake.

Due to the monsoon, plastic bottles and other waste have gathered in large numbers at Kavoor lake. Despite the lake being a popular spot for walking, exercise, and leisure activities, it's disheartening to see people neglecting to keep the surroundings clean.

Despite the presence of dustbins, people continue to litter plastic bottles, and none of the elected representatives have taken the initiative to maintain the lake, despite its recent rejuvenation.

Environmentalist Bhuvan expressed concern, stating, "The lakes rejuvenated under the smart city initiative lack maintenance. They are constructed but not properly maintained. Rejuvenating a lake involves more than just construction. It should not include amenities such as parks and walking tracks to maintain its natural state."

Bhuvan also highlighted contamination issues in nearby wells, such as those near Kavoor lake and Bairady. "Even Gujjarakere lake faces contamination issues. People smoke and throw cigarette remains into the lake, which poses a danger to the water bodies," he added.

He emphasised the need for stricter measures, stating, "It should be restricted to the public and reserved solely for environmental purposes. We will appeal to the court regarding the neglect of unmaintained lakes. Health inspectors need to take action to impose fines on litterers, without being influenced by local corporators or elected representatives."

Bhuvan urged the government to fill vacant positions at the Pollution Control Board to ensure effective oversight.

It is to bring to your knowledge that Kavoor lake is model lake for segregation of trash and debris entering the lake and keeping lake clean. Your news is showing the debris collection point as whole lake where as whole lake is so clean without any trash in it after rejuvenation. You should also show positive work done by the government and not one sided. 2 silt traps and bund is provided to keep the lake and storm water drain seperate in lake. The storm water drain separates the trash entering the lake and collects it to one point. But the collection point is shown as the lake by you in your news. Is it right that you are deceiving the good work done and showing it as bad. But Daiji world is going to points where trash is collected and showing whole lake is filled with trash . Hats off to this type of media.

Deep within we are our police and we are our thieves.... Unless an awareness comes in individual hearts things will never improve... We are so accustomed to holding our noses and walking past dirty side walks that it has become commonplace to have dumping yards in public roads... A place as government as Udupi Sub Registrar office/SP office has loads of rubbish plastic packs in its bylanes... And we complain government for contagious deseases and pandemics.... waah Public Waah.... Public ganghagi hamara janm siddh Adhikar....

Smart city is only for smart people. We unfortunately are a bunch dumb people. We dont have civic sense. Smart city work has become nothing but a way for some corrupt politicians and their chelas to make money.

I always see that in early morning few boys with large bags, collecting waste from road side and inside cross roads, MCC must pay nominal amount to those house owners for waste garbage, I think peoples will stop throwing Garbage outside and hand over to these waste pickers. And Garbage and waste throwers will get money for that items. Now spending this much amount to Antony Garbage collector, the city is full of garbag. MCC can uplift the poor garbage pickers life also. No one will throw, because they get money.

People should have some civic sense, should respect public places and keep environment clean. The elected representatives won't teach you anything. They are there to fill their pockets not to serve society, only to serve themselves.
