Udupi, Jun 18: In a shocking incident on the Dadar Superfast Express, Train No. 22630 from Madurai to Panvel, a 51-year-old woman, Sundari Ganesan, was robbed of gold jewellery valued at Rs 1.7 lac. The robbery occurred in the early hours of May 29, while the train was stopped near a station.
Sundari Ganesan, traveling with her husband to visit their daughter in Mumbai, was asleep in coach S1 when the theft occurred. Around 11:15 PM, as the train halted, an unidentified perpetrator forcibly snatched 2 gold coins weighing 4 grams each, 2 attached gold balls, and a 28-gram gold mangalya string from her neck. She stated, “The assailant pulled the chain from my neck while I was asleep.”
Upon arriving in Mumbai, Sundari reported the incident to the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE), who indicated that the robbery likely took place near Innanje railway station in Innanje village, Udupi district. The stolen items, including the gold chain weighing 32 grams, are estimated to be worth approximately Rs 1.7 lac.
Local authorities have registered a case at Kaup police station crime Number 80/2024, invoking Section 392 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for robbery. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the culprit and recover the stolen jewellery.
