Udupi, June 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Udupi District, predicting heavy rainfall over the next five days. Recent storms and intense rainfall have resulted in substantial damage estimated at Rs 4.75 lac, according to district authorities.
During Tuesday night and Wednesday, Udupi experienced heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. Rainfall figures across the district were recorded at an average of 119.5 mm, with Karkala receiving 154.3mm, Kundapura 83.4mm, Udupi 142.9mm, Byndoor 81.4mm, Brahmavara 159.2mm, Kapu 173.8mm, and Hebri 105.2mm.
The powerful winds caused damage to areca nut farms in Kundapura and Brahmavara. Fallen trees disrupted traffic and caused power outages due to damage to electricity infrastructure. Residential areas incurred losses totaling Rs 1.40 lac from fallen trees and damaged cow sheds in Kundapura, Byndoor, and Brahmavara.
The District Disaster Management Authority has issued advisories urging the public to exercise caution during heavy rainfall. The public and fishermen are advised to exercise caution and avoid rivers, water bodies, and the sea and steer clear of low-lying areas. During this period, children and the public should stay away from dangerous electric poles and avoid coming into contact with fallen electric wires.
Public is to report any emergencies promptly to local authorities.
People should not stand near weak old buildings or trees, or under trees. Those living in low-lying areas or areas prone to flooding due to rain, or in weak buildings, should move to safer places or, if necessary, take shelter at care centers identified by the respective tahsildars.
