Hindi Film Awards for Social Causes

Lucknow, Oct 30 (IANS): Acknowledging the huge impact of cinema on India's socio-cultural life, a civil society organisation working in various fields of social concern here Sunday announced it would present awards for Hindi films in different categories.

The jury for the Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences (IRDS) Hindi Film Awards 2011 will be headed by serving Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitabh, who goes by only his first name.

Amitabh, also a social activist, holds the charge of Superintendent of Police, Rules and Manuals, Lucknow. The awards will be announced Jan 15.

"The awards shall not go by the commercial success or failure of a film, the glitz and the glamour or its star cast but will give prime importance to the social issues raised," IRDS secretary Nutan Thakur said.

"The IRDS Hindi Film Awards 2011 will be presented under six categories -- best Hindi movie, best male character, best female character, best director, best story and best song," she added.

The jury will also comprise social activists from different fields along with writers and a film critic, IRDS officials said.
