Udupi: Accused absconding for 29 years arrested by Padubidri police

Udupi, Jul 13: An accused, who had been absconding for the last 29 years after being released on bail, was arrested by the Padubidri police in Valencia, Mangaluru.

The arrested individual is Bashir Ahmed.

On January 10, 1995, at around 5 pm, an incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Padubidri police station. Sulaiman, a resident of Tenka Ermal, Kapu, is the complainant in the case.

According to the complaint, while Sulaiman was standing in Padubidri town, his friend Umar Farooq, a resident of Kudroli, Mangaluru, arrived with his friends Bashir Ahmed, Arif, and Mustafa, also residents of Kudroli. The group confronted Sulaiman, demanded the return of money owed to them, and threatened to kill him if he did not comply.

The Padubidri police quickly responded to the information, apprehended the accused, and registered a case. The accused were released on bail from the police station.

Among the accused, Arif and Mustafa appeared in court and were acquitted. However, Umar Farooq and Bashir Ahmed absconded, failing to appear in court for 29 years. As a result, the court issued LPC warrants for their arrest.

Following the orders of the Udupi district superintendent of police, under the direction of Prasanna M S, PSI of Padubidri police station, and with the assistance of ASI Rajesh P, HC Rajesh Herga, and PC Sandesh, the Padubidri police arrested the warrant accused Bashir Ahmed near Valencia, and produced him in the Udupi court.

The court has remanded Bashir Ahmed in judicial custody until July 15. The main accused in the case, Umar Farooq, passed away on December 15, 2020, at Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru, due to illness. His death certificate has been obtained and presented to the court.
