Udupi, Jul 16: Heavy downpour in the district on Tuesday, July 16, caused flooding in various regions. Low-lying areas were inundated, and roads were submerged due to overflowing rivers and tributaries.
The rapid rise in river water levels caused water to flow through roads and residential lands, making roadways invisible to commuters. The Sita river's rising water level led to rainwater flowing onto the roads. Consequently, the Hebri-Agumbe road was temporarily closed, and commuters from Udupi to Shivamogga were advised to take alternative routes.
Rainwater flooded the government school in Uppoor. When the school playground was inundated, the administration quickly moved books, documents, electronic items, and other reading materials to a safe place. The region experiences annual flooding during the monsoon due to river overflows. Rainwater also entered residential houses in the area. Villagers have appealed to the district administration to construct a retention wall to prevent water from entering the area.
Prashant Shetty, a teacher at the government high school in Uppoor, Brahmavar, said, “Due to heavy rain in upper areas like Shimoga and Chikkamagaluru, the rivers in low-lying areas are overflowing. The school area is flooded with water. If the rain continues, there may be chances of water flowing inside the school. We have shifted reading materials, computers, and books to a safe place. As the deputy commissioner has announced a holiday for school students, the flooding did not cause any problems."
