Incessant rains raise concerns of Mangaluru, Udupi becoming isolated

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (MS)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 19: The incessant monsoon rains lashing the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have caused hill collapses in all the ghat sections connecting these districts to the rest of the state. There is an imminent danger of these regions becoming isolated from the rest of Karnataka.

In addition to disrupted contact, there may be a scarcity of fruits and vegetables in the twin districts, as most supplies come from Bengaluru and other districts.

Due to a hill collapse in the Sakleshpur stretch of Shiradi Ghat, vehicular traffic is prohibited, with barricades placed at Mani. A large crack has developed at Kartoji near Madenadu on the Mani-Mysuru national highway, raising concerns about a nearby hill collapsing onto the road. Kodagu's DC has ordered a four-day traffic prohibition on this road starting at 8 PM on Thursday, July 18.

The hill that collapsed on the Mangaluru-Goa highway at Shiroor of Ankola on Tuesday remains uncleared, blocking traffic on that road.

Currently, only Charmadi Ghat, Nagodi Ghat Road, and Mala Ghat are in motorable condition. While hill collapses have occurred in some parts of Hulikal Ghat, vehicles are still moving. However, the closure of other ghats has significantly increased traffic on Hulikal Ghat, raising the risk of further collapses and traffic stoppages. Bisile Ghat remains difficult for vehicle movement due to its narrowness.

Most of these are man made problems. This Ghat digging in a unnatural way ,and bridges built ,etc ,are now showing their reaction ?When dug at the Ghat region ,simply dug and mud was simply slipping down without any barricade. With lot of rain water is running down at sides ,which make roads only problems.Contractors saw only money but not safety. Now public has to suffer.

Most of this is due to artificial flooding because of reckless cutting of hilly terrain for making place for areca plantations, realty layouts, widening of roads, blocking natural water pathways, filling up of open wells, haphazard dumping of construction debris, accumulation of solid plastic waste etc etc as the rainfall is never like yesteryears; moreover there are unprecedented landslides occuring all across due to unscientific cutting of hilly terrain for various reasons; it's an irony that despite such good rainfall Karnataka is considered as the second driest state in the country; imagine within a few months there will be a scarcity of water in the same places🤔😔🙏

There is one photo shared by 1000s of bhakths, which claims India under Modi led BJP, is contructing 100km road something like in 1 day? and worlds 1st. Picture of the road is like that of 16 lanes, beautifully tarred. Now, the reality is BJP Govt cant maintain even the highways which are built decades back. Excuses after excuses, come out in media. At times it is rain, at times it is land slide. Reality is corruption. 10 bridges collapse in 10days in bihar. Mera Desh Badal Raha Hai. :)

Tunnel in Shiradi Ghat road is immediately needed. There is unncessary delay in implementing this project due to lack of interest. This project was proposed more than a decade back, but due to lack of interest its still pending. In Karnataka, after Bengaluru region, the second highest revenue generating region is Mangaluru. Hence these two regions need to be connected closely with road expressways, high speed rail network so entire region around these cities gets developed. Requesting MPs and MLAs from Mangaluru/DK, Udupi and Hassan to work towards implementing tunnel project at the earliest.

In 1974 same type rain came and DK was tottaly became a small island. Exactly 50 years back on 26th July. Today tottaly dark and havey rain. Our DC has not declared holiday for childrens. My opinion is DC must declare holiday according to IMD report. If RED ALERT, he must declare holiday without any 2nd thoughts.
