Bantwal, Jul 19: A tragic incident occurred at the turn near Shri Ramanjaneya Bhajan Mandir in Punjalkatte, where a truck lost control and overturned, resulting in one death and four injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Karthik, a resident of Farangipete.

The injured include the truck driver Umar, laborer Akhilesh, and pedestrians Manish and Sandeep. Among the injured, Akhilesh and Umar are reported to be in critical condition.

The accident involved an Eicher truck (KA702578) belonging to Madhwa Ravi Enterprises and Arrangers, which was transporting shamiana materials to Beltangady. The mishap occurred due to the negligent and reckless driving of Umar, who was behind the wheel at the time. As the truck approached the turn near the temple in Punjalkatte, it went out of control and collided with an electric pole on the roadside, causing significant damage to the pole.

The truck then overturned, trapping Umar, Akhilesh, and Karthik inside. Pedestrians Manish and Sandeep, who were walking along the roadside, were also injured as they fell into the nearby loose soil due to the accident. Local youth had to struggle to extricate the trapped individuals from the overturned truck.

The injured were initially treated at Punjalkatte Government Hospital before being transferred to Bantwal Government Hospital for further treatment. Upon examination, the doctors at Bantwal confirmed that Karthik had succumbed to his injuries. The other injured individuals have been taken to AJ Hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.

A complaint has been registered at Punjalkatte police station based on a report filed by Asif.
