Mangaluru, Jul 20: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta addressed issues concerning the National Highway and discussed preliminary road plans for Nantoor and KPT.
Regarding the planning, officials explained, "The road planning is in the preliminary stage. NH 73 will extend towards Kulshekar, with free movement on the left-hand side. Only right-hand side travellers will need to cross the road. The majority of traffic will use the service road. Sections of the road will be designated as footpaths, with initial construction focusing on the central portion."
"In the second phase, we will construct a service road from one side extending from Udupi to Mangaluru. The remaining section will be completed subsequently due to constraints from limited land. After completion, traffic management will be improved. Subsequent reconstruction of the service road will take 2 years to complete the project."
"We require land from ITBT Hostel (BCM Paduva), and discussions with the Deputy Commissioner are underway. Land from Srinivas Mallya Memorial Park is also needed to expand the road. The Miyawaki Forest at Paduva must be relocated," he added.
Also present, Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal emphasised, "A comprehensive plan is essential to address ongoing traffic issues. We require Rs 1,000 crore for the Kuntikana to Pumpwell flyover, ensuring it remains under 16 km. Land acquisition is crucial. Mescom officials should collaborate with NHAI within a week to resolve technical issues. Rapid planning is also needed for B C Road to Surathkal."
Capt. Brijesh Chowta sought information on estimated funds, with NHAI officials responding, "This is an independent project; maintenance costs will be communicated within 15 days. The KPT Paduva road will be upgraded to a Mumbai-Bengaluru standard with underpasses and circles."
District Commissioner Mullai Muhilan, MP Brijesh Chowta, Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur, and other MCC corporators were present at the event.
