Govt pressured by IT industry; we are evaluating '14-hour work day' Bill: Santhosh Lad

Bengaluru, Jul 22 (IANS): Karnataka Minister for Labour, Santhosh Lad, stated on Monday that the government is under pressure from the IT industry to bring forth new legislation proposing extra hours of work for techies, but is evaluating the matter.

He clarified that the government is still evaluating the Bill that would allow software professionals to work for 14 hours a day.

Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, Minister Santhosh Lad said, “The Bill has come to us because of pressure from the IT industries; it is not the IT Minister (Priyank Kharge) himself who has come up with this idea. The industrialists are pressuring us for this. Since the pressure is from the industry, the Bill has come to us, and we are still evaluating it from the labour department’s perspective.”

“Now, the question is, I want all industrial heads to discuss it as the issue is in the public domain. People are free to express their opinions. I want all the major stakeholders to debate this. Since the matter has come to the public, there is dissent among IT employees.

“I want people to share their opinions. Based on this, we, as a department, will definitely look into the issue,” he stated.

When asked about the personal and social life of IT employees, he responded, “IT heads and leaders of big companies in the country need to discuss this. They will come forward for discussions over these issues, right? Let IT companies, owners, and directors come forward and discuss whether it is necessary or not.”

“Now, the dissent is coming from the union, isn’t it? Why don’t the IT heads talk about it? Whether the feedback is positive or negative, the government will look into what needs to be done,” he stated.

“Because it is an IT industry concern, we are addressing it. Nothing has been done suo moto by any department; neither has the IT minister acted independently. The pressure has come to the government from the IT industry.

“The government has done nothing on its own. The government and my department, in our wisdom, will make a decision,” he assured.

“My request and appeal to everyone is to give their opinion because it is in the public domain,” he appealed.

The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) expressed its concerns over this potential change, highlighting the significant impact it would have on employees’ mental and physical health and their work-life balance.

Anything that's extreme is counter productive. Work, Family and health must be balanced properly. In a country, where infrastructure and social security is poor, can't expect to workers to put in 14 hours of work a day. As a role model, first politicians must put in 14 hours a day productive work and give account of it to public. Real work, not mere publicity. Later ask public to follow their footsteps.

This kind of law applicable only those are loyal to their work and bottom level employees, not those are above managerial position, these are busy with internal politics. Moreover if someone working for clients from abroad then they have to decide how many hours to work , not by our local government. May be this is proposed by one of brainless top designated psychic person

First of all Bangalore traffic is so bad most of the people spend minimum 3 hrs to 6 hrs in Road. on top of it people work 14 hrs in office. almost 19-20 hrs for office, when he will get time to sleep and talk to family? are the people are made? , most of these service companies pays peanut salary. in 2000 they are giving 2to 2.5 lakh salary after 24 years(now) they are paying hardly 3.5 to 4lakh salary!!! look at Indian inflation and salary!! . people spend so much money to complete engineering. in Bangalore decent 2 bedroom house costs 25K. No one talk about this. A house made or carpenter earns minimum 30-40K per month without taxes and all govt. benefits. Metro work from outer ring road is going from last 4 years. they don't have money to complete. IT people don't have any job safety, they will be fired any day without any compensation. They are asked to resign without giving any salary. Not even they are giving 15 days basic salary per year which is in labor law. Why Murthy doesn't speak abt this? when he came to Infosys somewhere around 2018 why he took his son as advisor for him. he didn't find any suitable candidates in his 1lakh+ employees. Shame on him!!!
