Mangaluru, Aug 21: MBA students at Manel Srinivas Nayak Institute of Management (MSNIM) embarked on an immersive learning experience with a day-long excursion to rural Tulunadu on Saturday, August 17. The event, titled Kesard Onji Dina (A Day in the Slush Fields), was held in the fields adjacent to Shree Amrutheshwara Temple in Thiruvail, Vamanjoor, on the outskirts of Mangaluru. This field trip offered students a vibrant glimpse into the culture and traditions of rural Dakshina Kannada.
The programme commenced with a traditional Tulunadu-style inauguration. The event was graced by local dignitaries, including Balakrishna Bhat, the priest of Shree Amrutheshwara Temple, businessman Om Prakash, local corporator Hemalatha Raghu Salian, and social worker Sanjiva Moily. Dr Molly S Chaudhuri, director of MSNIM, presided.
Om Prakash, addressing the gathering, praised the institute for integrating such cultural experiences with academic learning. He urged students to appreciate the significance of agriculture and to recognize the challenges faced by farmers. "It is essential for the present generation to honor our culture and traditions," he remarked. Balakrishna Bhat offered insights into the rich heritage of Tulunadu, while Sanjiva Moily highlighted the importance of farming, encouraging students to embrace and uphold these traditions.
As part of the programme, students participated in a variety of competitive sporting events held in the paddy fields, including throwball, volleyball, relay races, pot-breaking, tug of war, backward running, and a treasure hunt. The day culminated in a prize distribution ceremony, with students enthusiastically participating in all activities—many experiencing the paddy fields for the first time.
Now in its third year, Kesard Onji Dina has become an annual event at MSNIM, designed to bridge the urban-rural divide and offer management students a unique educational experience. The challenges of the slush field serve as a metaphor for the competitive business environment, teaching students the value of teamwork, strategic thinking, resilience, and a competitive spirit.
The programme began with a welcome by first-year MBA student Keerthana Shetty, followed by a prayer led by Pallavi. Second-year MBA student Shashwath delivered the vote of thanks, while Thanisha served as the event’s compere. Nithesh concluded the day with an expression of gratitude. The programme was coordinated by assistant professors Suresh Shenoy, Nanditha Sunil, and Sathvika Shetty.
