Beltangady, Aug 21: Heavy rains in the Charmadi region have led to the Mrityunjaya river overflowing on Tuesday, causing significant concern among the local population in the Antar area of Charmadi village.
The intense rainfall, particularly in the hilly areas of Charmadi, caused large tree trunks and debris to float and get stuck at the Antar Kindi dam, leading to widespread flooding. The heavy rain in Charmadi Ghats resulted in water levels rising to the point where roads became impassable, with motorists capturing videos to highlight the severity of the situation.
Although there has been little rain in the Beltangady area itself, the heavy downpour in the Ghats has caused water to flood more than 20 acres of areca plantations in the Antar region, sparking anxiety among the locals.
The heavy rain that fell within just an hour on Monday caused rivers such as the Netravati to overflow due to the water flowing in from Didupe, Mittabagilu, Arbi Falls, and Kadamagundi, raising fears of a flood. Now, for the second consecutive day, residents living near the banks of the Mrityunjaya river are worried, recalling the devastating floods of five years ago.
In a surprising turn of events, a scooter that had gone missing during the catastrophic floods in Beltangady on August 9, 2019, has been recovered. The scooter belonged to Ashok Kadtimeeru from Malavantige village, who had parked it by the river and left for other work. On Monday, as the riverbed was cleared of rocks and sand due to the flooding, the missing scooter was uncovered and returned to its owner, five years after it had disappeared.
