Mangaluru, Sep 3: The school of commerce, finance, and accountancy of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) proudly hosted the 'Triumph and Tenacity' programme, a celebration of student achievements in academics and sports. The event aimed to recognize and felicitate students who have demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication, and perseverance in their respective fields.
The programme commenced with a soulful prayer, followed by a vibrant welcome dance that set the tone for the day. Dr Manuel Tauro, dean of the school of commerce, finance, and accountancy, delivered a warm welcome speech, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and celebrating student achievements.
The inauguration ceremony involved the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, symbolizing the illumination of knowledge and excellence. This was followed by the release of the conference proceedings, a compilation of research papers that were presented during the international conference organised by the department on March 19.
The chief guest of the programme was Padma bhushan K V Kamath, the chairman of the National Bank of Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID), an alumnus of the University. Kamath in his address shared insights drawn from his extensive experience in the banking and financial sectors. He spoke about overcoming life’s constraints and how embracing challenges can lead to transformation. He emphasized that success often requires thinking laterally to find innovative solutions and encouraged students to allow ideas to flow freely. Drawing on his experience with BRICS and the New Development Bank, he highlighted the importance of understanding diverse cultures and adapting to change. Mr. Kamath advised the students that tenacity and a willingness to face challenges head-on are key to reaching greater heights in life.
Kamath was felicitated by the University. Dr Alwyn D’Sa, registrar, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru read out the citation highlighting Kamath's remarkable contributions to the finance sector.
Dr Praveen Martis SJ, the vice-chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), spoke about the university's commitment to nurturing talent and fostering an environment conducive to holistic development. Fr Melwin Pinto SJ, also addressed the attendees, reinforcing the institution's commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility.
The ceremony also included the felicitation of students of school of commerce, finance, and accountancy who excelled in various domains. 17 students who cleared CA, 2 Students who cleared CMA, 12 students who got ACCA affiliations, Toppers of BCom and MCom. and 2 National Level sports achievers were felicitated during the programme.
Dr Denis Fernandes, director of Arrupe Block, Dr Zeena D’Souza, associate dean, Dr Shobha, head of the school and Dr Caroleena Janefer, convenor of the programme were present on the dais.
Dr Shobha delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Rishal D’Souza.
About Dr K V Kamath
Kamath hails from the town of Kundapur. After matriculation, he completed his PUC (Pre-University), which at that time was only one year in length, at St Aloysius College. After completing his PUC, he joined National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (known at that time as Karnataka Regional Engineering College) for a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. After graduating from NITK Surathkal, he joined the Indian Institute of management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) for a post graduate diploma in management.
Kamath started his career with ICICI (Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India) in the Project Finance division and moved on to different departments. As part of his general management responsibilities, he initiated and implemented ICICI's computerisation program. Substantial investments in technology from those early years have resulted in systems that are today a competitive advantage for ICICI. Kamath has generally been credited with expanding ICICI's businesses to evolve it into a technology-enabled financial organisation catering to the financial needs of corporate and retail customers
In 1988, Kamath joined the Asian Development Bank, Manila in their private sector department. In May 1996, Kamath returned to ICICI as its managing director and chief executive officer. On May 2 2011, he was appointed as non-executive chairman of the second-largest software exporter, Infosys Ltd. After being appointed as the first chief of the New Development Bank set up by the BRICS, he went on to step down from this post of chairman and independent director effective June 5, 2015.
He has to his credit several accolades and awards, most prominent among them is the Padma Bhushan Award from the Indian government conferred to him in the year 2008.
