Udupi, Sep 10: Veronica Cornelio, spokesperson of Karnataka Pradesh Congress committee, has urged the BJP to understand that the law applies equally to everyone, following filing of a case at the Manipal police station against BJP leaders for insulting the image of chief minister Siddaramaiah during a protest.

Veronica Cornelio emphasized that every Indian has the right to protest, provided it is done in a lawful manner. “No one opposes lawful protests. The BJP has conducted numerous protests in the past. Were cases filed against them during those times?”

Veronica criticized the act of insulting a chief minister, who holds a prestigious position, by using derogatory symbols as inappropriate. “It was the responsibility of the MLAs present at the scene to prevent such acts. Instead of taking action, they behaved as if their workers' actions were acceptable,” she stated.

Veronica also pointed out that the BJP seems to have forgotten previous instances where cases were filed against individuals who insulted chief ministers under BJP rule. “Congress is not engaging in hate politics. The complaint was filed because the insult to the chief minister caused pain to our party workers. The police have registered a case accordingly. The BJP’s attempt to twist this into something else is absurd,” she said.

Veronica further criticized the BJP for ignoring its own actions while accusing Congress of wrongdoing. “The Congress party and its workers are not bound to accept every violent behaviour by the BJP. The party will respond appropriately through legal means when necessary.”

Veronica also urged elected representatives to focus on resolving local issues rather than making statements. “MLAs should prioritize addressing problems in their constituencies rather than engaging in other activities. They must demonstrate their capability by effectively addressing these issues,” she said.
