Mangaluru, Sep 15: The residents of Pavoor Uliya staged an innovative protest at the Netravati River on Sunday, September 15, condemning the district administration's inaction against illegal sand mining on the island. The protesters partially submerged themselves in the river, demanding immediate action to stop the illicit activities.
Led by prominent community leaders, including Fr Valarian D'Souza, vicar forane of Bantwal deanery, Alwyn D'Souza, president of Catholic Sabha, Stany Lobo, former president of Catholic Sabha, Mithesh D'Souza, former president of ICYM, and Gilbert D'Souza, local leader, the protesters expressed their frustration.
Gilbert D'Souza addressed the gathering and said, "Two months ago, the district administration assured us that mining would not be allowed on the island. The DC even formed a commission to investigate, but the illegal sand mafia has resumed operations. Geology and mining department officials are conducting surveys on boats owned by the same illegal diggers. Despite repeated requests, the district collector has not visited the island, indicating complicity within the administration. We've lost trust in the DC and administration. Today's protest serves as a warning. If our demands are ignored, we'll plan further, more intense protests."
The community is determined to protect their island and has demanded swift action from the authorities.
