Mangaluru's CFAL campus takes bold steps toward carbon neutrality

Media Release

Mangaluru, Sep 19: The Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL), along with its sister organization ELC, both under the trust the learning centre, has embarked on an ambitious environmental initiative, emphasizing the critical role of trees in mitigating climate change. Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Mangalore, G Santosh Kumar, spearheaded the ceremonial tree planting today, marking the beginning of a year-long campaign to plant 2000 trees in and around the CFAL campus.

This initiative aligns with the growing recognition, highlighted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), that afforestation and reforestation are critical tools in the fight against global warming. Trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it, thereby helping to offset emissions from human activities. As such, CFAL’s tree planting campaign is not merely a symbolic gesture but a calculated intervention aimed at enhancing carbon sequestration capabilities in the region.

CFAL and ELC’s commitment to this cause extends beyond tree planting; they are dedicated to nurturing a healthier, greener environment that supports the well-being and growth of every child on their campus. The institutions are also launching an innovative academic program titled 'The Nature Perspective', designed to educate students on the importance of viewing the world through an ecological lens. This programme aims to foster a generation that is not only aware of the environmental challenges we face but is also equipped with the knowledge and tools to mitigate them effectively.

The IPCC’s reports have repeatedly confirmed that without significant action, the impacts of climate change will become increasingly severe, affecting ecosystems, economies, and human health. CFAL recognizes that education is the foundation of long-term change. By integrating climate education into the curriculum from Grade 1, CFAL is investing in the creation of a climate-literate generation that will be equipped to make informed decisions and take action to mitigate the effects of climate change.

This year’s campaign is part of a larger legacy of environmental stewardship by CFAL. Previous efforts include tree planting initiatives at Kottara Cross (2016), Kuntikan flyover (2017), St. Ann's playground (2018), Blueberry Hills (2019), and Udyavara (2022). Last year, CFAL collaborated with the Vana group to plant over 25,000 mangrove pods in the Udyavara backwaters, a critical habitat for coastal biodiversity and a powerful carbon sink.

CFAL and ELC's approach combines practical action with educational outreach, reflecting a holistic strategy to address climate change. By engaging students directly in environmental activities, CFAL is not only contributing to immediate carbon sequestration efforts but is also instilling a sense of responsibility in the next generation—an essential component of any long-term strategy to combat climate change.

About CFAL and ELC: CFAL (Centre for Advanced Learning) and ELC (Early Learning Centre) are sister organizations under the trust the learning centre. Located in Mangalore, they are committed to academic excellence and environmental sustainability, offering programmes that prepare students for competitive exams while also educating them on the importance of environmental stewardship.
