Bengaluru, Oct 7: The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association is urging the transport department to revoke its mandate requiring the installation of vehicle location tracking devices (VLTD) and panic buttons in existing vehicles. The federation has also raised concerns about the effectiveness of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP).
Aravind Appaji, the federation's secretary, highlighted the risks involved in retrofitting older vehicles with VLTDs, noting potential wiring issues that may not be covered by insurance. “Installing VLTDs in older vehicles poses challenges, and if issues arise, we may be left unprotected,” he stated.
He further expressed apprehension about data privacy, emphasizing the risk of leaks regarding vehicle movements. “These devices are already pre-installed in vehicles purchased after 2019, yet we have yet to see any real benefits. Additionally, vendors are charging Rs 5,500 annually for renewal fees. With mobile phones able to trigger alarms, what purpose does a panic button serve?” Appaji questioned.
Appaji also alleged that a lobbying group is pushing for both the installation of HSRP and the transition from driving license books to smart cards. “The transport department claims that HSRP can help recover stolen vehicles, but how many have been traced this way? Instead of smart cards, why can’t we have a simple QR code that can be scanned in this digital age?” he asked.
The federation has formally submitted these concerns to transport minister Ramalinga Reddy. The state government has set a deadline of November 30, 2024, for the installation of these devices in all public service and goods vehicles holding national permits.
According to the transport department, the installation cost for the devices is set at Rs 7,599, excluding GST.
