Bantwal, Oct 9: The Bantwal Senior Civil and JMFC Court has ordered accused Hasanabba from Pudu village to pay a fine of Rs 2.5 lac and an additional Rs 10,000, sentencing him to one year in jail for his involvement in a cheque bounce case.

The ruling was delivered by Judge Bhagyamma in the court.

Hasanabba had taken a loan from the South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank, Farangipete branch, in 2012. After obtaining the loan, he failed to repay the amount on time and defaulted.

Consequently, the bank initiated legal proceedings against him under the Cooperative Societies Act. In 2019, when the bank was about to auction Hasanabba's property, he visited the branch and issued a cheque for the outstanding loan amount. However, the cheque bounced, leading the bank to file a case in court.

The accused claimed in court, "I have never taken a loan from the bank and have not issued any cheque. Therefore, I do not owe the bank any money." He also alleged that he was being "physically and mentally harassed."

However, considering the documents submitted, including a petition made by the accused during the auction of his property in 2019, the Bantwal Senior Civil and JMFC Court ruled him guilty of the charges.

The court warned that failure to pay the ordered compensation would result in one year of imprisonment.

The bank was represented by lawyer Sukesh Kumar Shetty.
