Leopard killed by train on railway bridge in Kundapur

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (MS)

Kundapur, Oct 10: A train ran over a leopard early Wednesday on the railway overbridge built across the Sauparnika River at Badakere in Nada village, Kundapur taluk.

The leopard, a five-year-old male, is believed to have been searching for prey, as there is forested land on one side of the railway track.

Locals informed the forest department, and ACF Prakash Poojary, Kundapur zone forest officer Raghavendra Naik, DRFO Muguran, Beat Forester Ramappa, and other personnel took the leopard's carcass for a post-mortem. It was later buried at the Vandse depot of the Kundapur zone forest department.

A similar incident occurred at the same location on February 2, 2021, when a black leopard, a rare species, was also struck by a train.

As such incidents have occurred before, the railways must come up with a permanent solution to avoid such incidents in the future, such as constructing fences on both sides of the track
