Kundapur, Oct 11: A captivating tiger dance performance was held on the campus of Kundapur Board High School on Thursday evening, led by Kundapura Kalakshethra.

Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the traditional Kundapur tiger dance. The event was flagged off by Rajeeva Kotian, who tied the strap around the gonde (waist support) of the lead tiger dancer, marking the beginning of the performance.

Explaining the purpose of the event, B. Kishore Kumar, president of Kalakshethra, said, "Like the tiger dance of Mangaluru and Udupi, the Kundapur tiger dance has its own distinct identity and religious significance. In comparison to other regions, the Kundapur tiger dance is unique in its variety, background, and religious rituals. Unfortunately, it is on the verge of extinction due to a lack of encouragement. Kalakshethra is committed to preserving this tradition and passing it on to future generations. From its inception, Kalakshethra has supported the culture, traditions, and art of Kundapur. Let us all work together to protect and promote our heritage."

The musicians supporting the performance, Dr. Manjunatha Devadiga, Suresha, Pratap, Rajesh, and Subramanya, along with the tiger dancers, were felicitated during the event.

Sanath Kumar Rai of Geetha Gayana Organization, Jonson D Almeida, president of Rosary Credit Cooperative Society, Girish G K, Mahesh Poojary, Mohan Saranga, Damodar Pai, Joy Carvalho, Sainatha Shet, Praveena Kumar, and Trivikrama Pai were present at the event.

The programme was compered by Ramachandra and Rajesha Kaveri. The evening concluded with various tiger dance troupes showcasing their skills.
