Kundapur: Mother, partner sent to judicial custody for assaulting child

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur

Kundapur, Oct 30: A court has denied bail and ordered judicial custody for a mother and her partner, accused of a brutal assault on her three-and-a-half-year-old child in Amasebail. The Kundapur court rejected the bail applications of the mother, Poornapriya, and her partner Suhail on Tuesday.

The incident came to light on September 13, when the mother brought the child to Udupi government hospital, claiming the child needed treatment due to health issues. Medical staff discovered severe injuries on the child's body, and the child was found to be unconscious. Suspecting foul play, the district health officer alerted the district child protection unit, which transferred the child to a private hospital for advanced care. Following treatment, the child recovered, prompting child protection officer Mahesh Devadiga to visit and investigate further, leading to a complaint being filed at the Amasebail police station.

Upon recovery, the child was interviewed, during which the mother initially claimed the injuries were from a fall. However, an intense investigation by the Child Protection Committee revealed the abuse. The mother, reportedly troubled by her child’s refusal to sleep on the bed, had, along with Suhail, subjected the child to severe assault, targeting sensitive areas of the child’s body.

On October 24, the accused surrendered to the court and sought bail. Recognizing the gravity of the case, assistant public prosecutor Uday Kumar filed a plea to cancel the interim bail, which was granted earlier. Consequently, on Tuesday, the second additional civil court JMF has rejected their bail applications and ordered judicial custody.
