Mangaluru, Nov 1: The sixth additional district sessions court has acquitted all the accused in the 2016 murder case of Mohammed Safwan, who was killed near the Thokkottu railway overbridge.

Safwan was reportedly murdered on the night of April 26, 2016, allegedly as an act of revenge for the murder of Raju Kotian of Ullal. Mohammed Saleem, Nizamuddin, and Safwan had arrived at the Thokkottu railway flyover after completing a catering job and were on their way to Pilar by bike. The accused—Rahul alias Back Rahul, Pavanraj, Kartik, Shivaraj, Edwin Rahul D’Souza, Rahul Poojary, and Hemachandra—attacked them with lethal weapons. While Saleem and Nizamuddin managed to escape, Safwan was fatally assaulted. The Ullal police station registered a case regarding the incident.

Eyewitnesses to the murder included individuals returning from prayers at the Ullal Darga. Evidence collected, including blood on the clothing and weapons recovered from the accused, reportedly matched that of the deceased. Preliminary investigation was conducted by PSI Bharati, and inspector Ashok later filed the chargesheet.

Justice Kantaraju S V presided over the inquiry and concluded that the prosecution failed to prove the accused’s guilt, resulting in their acquittal.

Beluvayi Arun Bangera, Rajesh Kumar Amtadi, and Asha Nayak represented the defense for the accused.
