Mangaluru, Dec 4: Cyclone Fengal brought heavy rainfall to Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, causing widespread damage on Tuesday. While the intensity of rainfall subsided later in the day, its impact was felt in multiple areas.
As a precaution, Anganwadis, schools, and PU colleges in the district were declared closed on Tuesday. Several low-lying areas in Mangaluru city experienced waterlogging, flooding homes and shops, and collapsing compound walls, leaving residents in distress. Areas like Kodialbail near TMA Pai Hall, Bhagavathi Nagar Road, Kodialguttu Road, Kottara, Kottara Chowki, and Malemar faced severe waterlogging issues. Properties in Bejai, Karangalpadi, Jappu, and other locations were also damaged.
In Kodialguttu, a retaining wall along a stormwater drain collapsed. Landslides disrupted the Bajpe-Adyapadi road connection, while a house in Aral village, Bantwal taluk, suffered damage. At Mangaluru Port, strong winds caused anchored fishing boats to drift away on Monday night. In Kuloor, rainwater filled a pit dug for a gas pipeline, creating a safety hazard.
At Peraaje junction in Aranthodu, heavy wind and rain damaged an auto stand, forcing auto-rickshaw drivers to park their vehicles along the roadside.
Bajpe airport recorded 156 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, marking a significant increase.
In Moodbidri, heavy winds on Monday caused a large tree to fall on the house of Leela Shetty in Ramamohan Nagar Colony, Paladka. The house sustained severe damage, but no injuries were reported. Locals immediately assisted in clearing the fallen tree. In Kadandale village, a coconut tree struck by lightning caused damage to the house of Honnamma Gowdti and her electrical appliances.
In Puttur, heavy rain caused the wall of Radha’s house in Kandadabettu, Aral village, Bantwal taluk, to collapse. The tiled roof and stone brick walls were partially destroyed, but no casualties were reported.
The meteorological department has forecast continued rainfall for the next two days, prompting authorities to issue high-alert warnings along the coast.
