Mangaluru, Dec 16: A woman who had come to participate in the Pinda Pradhana ritual for her brother-in-law tragically drowned and lost her life at Someshwara beach on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Usha (72), was the wife of late Jagadish Bhandary from Derebail. Usha’s brother-in-law, Karunakar Bhandary, had passed away a few days earlier. She had arrived at Someshwara along with her relatives to take part in the ritual.
After completing the ritual, Usha and her relatives were performing a sea bath as part of the rites when she slipped and was swept away by the waves. Despite the relatives witnessing the incident and crying out for help, the locals who rushed into the sea to rescue her could only recover her unresponsive body. She was declared dead by the time they brought her to shore.
Usha had retired as an assistant secretary after serving for 40 years in NMPA (New Mangalore Port Authority). She is survived by her daughter.
The body was shifted to K S Hegde Hospital in Deralakatte for postmortem, and a case has been registered at Ullal police station.
