Mangaluru: Supervisor replaces QR code, swindles petrol pump of Rs 58.85 lac

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In a shocking incident, a petrol pump supervisor allegedly swindled Rs 58.85 lac by replacing the fuel outlet’s QR code with his personal account’s QR code.

The accused, Mohanadas, who served as a supervisor at a private fuel outlet in Bangra Kuloor, was entrusted with managing the financial transactions of the petrol pump. Between March 1, 2023, and July 31, 2023, he reportedly removed the QR code belonging to the pump and replaced it with his personal QR code. Customers were made to believe that the code was linked to the pump’s official account, resulting in Rs 58,85,333 being transferred to his personal account.

The manager of the fuel outlet has filed a complaint regarding the fraud at the city’s CEN police station.

It is not normalHow come manager didnt notice that no money is coming in´May be superwiser self must have supervising everything?Such things happen here also but not in petrol pumps.Railway has put this QR code where people can draw tickets using this by paying.QR code is outside were ticket can draw.Sometime ago they found someother QR code on where previous code was there.Someone simply stuck their own code on the original one.No money was found inside and sticker was quite different than the original. So better one should always pay attention before one does the quer code makes foto.It might give out your bank account Nr.Miscrants are everywhere .

Why they were not taking stock of sales daily? If it has run for so long, there might be some other higher ups involved in this jhumla or this chap might have been smart enough to intermittently using his QR code alternating with the bunks code to avoid detection!

When pump owner place the order in company and sends the RTGS or demand draft those details already give the purchase details to tax department and they can calculate the per litre commission from that easily.

This is exact reason why outside India, none of the country is aggressive in qr code transaction. They foresee all these problems. But in India, drums are rolled regarding this ease of transaction for political stunt. But otherwise, it is indeed very easy form of transaction if care is taken to avoid such fraud, out of personal interest.

QR code based transactions is the best and easiest way to make payment. Frauds like these can happen anyhow..Even otp based frauds are happening on a daily basis outside India where the transaction took place without receiving the otp.

QR code is taking over everywhere from Cheque to product barcodes to Postal address. Even in Credit card machine people put devices which can capture the card details that's happening a lot in Abroad compared to that here no customer is getting compromised it's the marchant's responsibility to see that QR code aren't compromised. Apart from this if you try Rupay credit card to pay via QR code then personal QR codes won't get payments and only marchant QR codes would work so this gives a red flag as that person QR code isn't registered to a business but to person account.

I understand your point. But I think if we look at the big picture QR code has revolutionised payment in our country. With such a large population, such frauds will always happen and unavaoidalbe. We just have to be careful and take the beenfit of technology.
