Mangaluru: St Agnes College organises annual Sports Day

Mangaluru, Jan 10: The annual Sports Day of St Agnes College was conducted on January 10. Shalan Pinto, international power lifter, and alumnus of the College was the chief guest.

In October 2024, at the Commonwealth Bench Press championship held in Sun City, South Africa, Shalan had achieved a momentous milestone by securing the gold medal and the coveted "best lifter" title in the 47-kg junior category. Her incredible performance on the world stage is a testament to her hard work, perseverance, and indomitable spirit. She has consistently proven her prowess over the years winning 9 state-level medals, 7 national-level medals breaking numerous power lifting records.

In her inaugural address, Pinto urged the students to participate in sports activities and also build up their team spirit. She said that sports activities help one to develop patience and self-belief to direct oneself to achieve one’s goals through consistent effort and determination. The games torch was passed on by the leading sports students of St
Agnes College and lit by the sports secretary, Trisha Shetty, III BA.

The chief guest officially declared the Sports Day 2025 open and thereafter, released a bunch of colourful balloons to mark the blue skies with a celebratory spirit. The chief guest received the salute from the splendours marching teams.

Among the dignitaries present for the inaugural were Sr Dr M Maria Roopa AC, joint secretary, St Agnes College, Ravi Bhat, the PTA vice-president, Sr M Carmel Rita AC, the administrator, Sr Dr M Roopa Rodrigues AC, the vice-principal, Sr Dr M Vinora AC, the PG co-ordinator, Dr Thangarani, the physical education director.

The physical education teachers of St Agnes CBSE School, Babitha and Salvia D’Souza were the judges for the March Past at the inaugural ceremony. The march passed showcased the theme ‘Tribes of India’, where in the students explicated the details of the tribes and displayed their respective costumes.

After an eventful day, the valedictory ceremony commenced at 3:30 pm. Vinatha K, associate professor, Department of Psychology, was the chief guest at the valedictory programme and distributed the prizes for the annual sports day 2024-25. 

In her address, Vinatha K congratulated the winners for their exceptional performance and said that participation in sports activities is a sign of excellence in itself.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Prima Ferrao, assistant professor, Department of Nutrition and Health Education for the inaugural. The lowering of the college flag brought the annual sports day towards a close, and the physical director of the college, Dr Thangarani proposed the vote of thanks. The day concluded with the singing of the national anthem.
