Shimoga: Boy from Mother Theresa School Chosen for Bravery Award

Shimoga, Jan 3: Sandesh Parameshwar Hegde, a tenth standard student of Mother Theresa High School for the Deaf and Blind here, has been chosen for National Bravery Award pertaining to the year 2010.

The award is being conferred by Indian Council of Child Welfare, New Delhi, for children who show extra-ordinary courage and adventurism. Geeta Siddarth, president of the council, has announced that the award will be handed over to the winners at the Republic Day function being held at New Delhi on January 26 by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh.

Hegde, who saw that a girl named Rashmi had slipped and fallen into Magi rivulet at Heggaru in Balekoppa village, Siddapur taluk, Uttara Kannada district in July 2010, and was fighting for life, had jumped into the rivulet and saved her. The boy got additional commendation because of the fact that he is deaf and dumb, but could still sense the panic by watching the hand movements of the girl, and jump to rescue her, she added.
