Calangute, Jan 24: Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira has attributed the dip in foreign tourist arrivals to the disruptive behavior of certain domestic tourists. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Sequeira said that the habit of clicking unsolicited selfies with foreigners and invading their privacy has driven them away from the beach town.
“Foreigners no longer visit Calangute beach because Indian tourists insist on taking selfies and photos with them,” Sequeira stated.
The sarpanch revealed that he has submitted a proposal to the state government to promote the arrival of quality domestic tourists, but it has not been acted upon. He suggested introducing checks at entry points to ensure that tourists traveling in jeeps and cars have proper accommodations booked.
“These tourists park their vehicles haphazardly, sleep on the beach, and contribute little to the local economy,” Sequeira said, emphasizing the need for tourists who add value to the local business ecosystem.
When questioned about a recent assault on tourists by shack staff, Sequeira clarified that the panchayat has no control over the operations of beach shacks.
