Kasargod, Feb 22: In a historic moment for Kerala's Kasaragod district, a road was renamed in honour of legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Friday. The batting great himself was present at the ceremony, having flown in from Dubai after commentating on the India vs Bangladesh ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match.

The Kasaragod Municipality officially renamed the ‘Kasargod Municipal Stadium Road’ as ‘Sunil Gavaskar Municipal Stadium Road’ in recognition of his immense contributions to cricket.

Gavaskar received a grand welcome upon his arrival, with local officials and cricket enthusiasts celebrating the occasion. Kasaragod MLA NA Nellikkunnu hailed the moment as ‘historic’, while municipality chairman Abbas Begum highlighted its significance for local cricket.

"Sunil Gavaskar's presence is expected to provide a major boost to the cricketing sector in the district, which has a rich history of nurturing talented players, including those who excelled in prestigious tournaments like the Ranji Trophy," Begum stated.

A key figure in India's 1983 World Cup-winning squad, Gavaskar was the first cricketer to surpass 10,000 Test runs. Since retiring, he has continued to contribute to the sport as a commentator and mentor. His visit to Kasaragod has further inspired budding cricketers in the region.

Sadly I am is missing this event, it is great thing happening in my native town Kasrodi. Naming of road in name of Gavaskar is fitting tribute to cricket legend. That too in town of rich cricket heritages like kasaragod. In my teenage times we are seeing Gavaskar playing test match full day battings and even one day match like test match with full cautions and defence. He is inspiring many of us budding school cricketers and I am proudly remembering once I am playing for underball tournament in naimarmoola ground my team bangarikunnu is losing match and they called me as junior Gavaskar for scoring 12 runs off 54 balls in our losing efforts. Nice they is naming a road in the town area so it remembers drivers to drive slow and safe also , not like highway and causing accidents. This effort by MLA NA Nellikunnu Janab is laudaable and honouring our cricketing legends . We must name more roads after heroes like Azharuddin , Kapil Dev, Jadeja , Nayan Mongia , Manoj Prabhakar, Sidhu etc who gave cricket a real meaning and made us fixated with the game. God bless Kasargod’s municipality for this efforts

No doubt Gavaskar was a great batsman. There is already a road named after my uncle Lt(Lieutenant )Hashim Street who was martyred in 1965 war with the enemy Pakistan and also a memorial setup two years ago near Kasaragod municipality. Please visit and pay respect. Kasaragod municipality is doing great jobs in all areas.
