Nagarkurnool, Feb 22: In a tragic incident, a section of the under-construction Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel near Domalapenta collapsed on Saturday morning, leaving at least seven workers feared trapped.

According to officials, around three meters of the tunnel’s roof caved in near the Srisailam reservoir while laborers were engaged in their routine work. The project had commenced just four days ago, they added.

Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Gaikwad confirmed that the collapse occurred at the 14th km mark of the tunnel. “The roof of the left-side tunnel caved in while workers were on duty. Two rescue teams have entered to assess the situation. Given that the collapse happened 14 km inside, we will have clarity only after the teams return,” he told Indian Express.
Around 50 workers were present at the site when the mishap occurred, of whom 43 have been safely evacuated, an official informed. The police were alerted about the incident at approximately 10 am.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed shock over the tragedy and confirmed injuries, though he did not specify the number. He immediately directed officials, including the District Collector, SP, Fire Department, and Irrigation Department, to rush to the spot and initiate relief operations.

Meanwhile, BRS leader KT Rama Rao launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led government, blaming the incident on compromised quality standards and inadequate supervision. He alleged that negligence and collusion with contractors for commissions had led to repeated mishaps.

Rescue operations are underway as authorities work tirelessly to bring the trapped workers to safety.
