Delhi assembly session from Feb 24; speaker election, cag reports on agenda

New Delhi, Feb 22: The first session of the newly elected Delhi Legislative Assembly will commence on February 24, where members will take the oath of office. The session will run for three days, concluding on February 27.

Gandhi Nagar MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely has been appointed as the pro-tem speaker to oversee the election of the speaker, scheduled for 2pm on February 24. On February 25, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena will address the Assembly, followed by the tabling of Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports.

A discussion on the Motion of Thanks for the lieutenant governor’s address will begin at 11am on February 27, followed by the election of the Deputy Speaker.

BJP leader and Speaker nominee Vijender Gupta stated that the government’s priority is to present 14 pending CAG reports from 2017-18 to 2021-22, which the AAP government had failed to table. These reports cover key issues, including vehicular air pollution, children's welfare, liquor regulation, health infrastructure, and the functioning of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

The non-tabling of these reports had been a major political flashpoint between the BJP and AAP before the elections. The BJP had accused the previous AAP government of deliberately stalling the reports to hide alleged corruption. The matter even reached the courts, with the BJP seeking legal intervention for the reports to be presented.

With the new government in place, the long-pending reports are expected to be a key focus in the upcoming Assembly session.
