Congress leader hacked to death in Bengaluru; friend injured

Bengaluru, Feb 23: A Congress leader was brutally murdered near Garuda Mall in Ashoknagar around 1 am on February 22. The deceased has been identified as Hyder Ali.

According to reports, Hyder Ali was returning home on a bike with a friend after attending a live band event late at night when he was attacked by assailants who had been following him on another bike. The attackers assaulted him before fleeing the scene.

Police from Ashoknagar station rushed to the spot upon receiving information and found Hyder Ali lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to Bowring Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Tension at Bowring Hospital

Following news of his murder, Hyder Ali’s supporters gathered at Bowring Hospital, wielding machetes and other weapons in protest. They also attempted to storm the hospital gate in anger. However, Ashoknagar police managed to bring the situation under control.

A case has been registered at Ashoknagar police station, and efforts are underway to track down the suspects involved in the killing.

Friend injured in attack

Hyder Ali’s friend, who was with him at the time of the attack, also sustained injuries and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Hyder Ali, a resident of Anepalya, was reportedly close to Congress MLA N A Haris and had actively campaigned for him during elections.

DCP of the central division, H T Shekhar, confirmed that the murder took place around 1:30 am while Hyder Ali was on his way home. "The assailants blocked his vehicle with a car before attacking him. However, Hyder Ali was not a political leader. His elder brother was a social worker," the officer clarified.

Hyder Ali had 11 criminal cases against him

According to police records, Hyder Ali was a rowdy-sheeter under the jurisdiction of Ashoknagar police station. He had 11 criminal cases registered against him in various stations, including charges of attempted murder and assault.

Police sources revealed that while Hyder Ali had been involved in criminal activities since 2014, he had stayed away from crimes since 2022. However, he continued to maintain his influence in his locality.

A special team has been formed to trace and arrest the killers.
