Mumbai, Feb 26: Maharashtra is set to witness the establishment of 73 new schools, with 65 of them being English-medium and eight offering Marathi as the medium of instruction.
Additionally, 54 existing schools are likely to be permitted to expand by adding higher classes. Among these, 46 are English-medium, eight are Marathi-medium, and two are Urdu-medium schools.
The state’s school education department had received 241 proposals for both new schools and the expansion of existing ones. Following a detailed review, 127 proposals have been approved—73 for new schools and 54 for school expansions.
“The list of sanctioned proposals has now been made public to invite objections, if any. After this process, a final list will be submitted to the Ministry of School Education for approval,” an official from the department stated.
Mumbai will receive the highest number of new schools, with 28 additions, though only one will be a Marathi-medium institution. Pune and Nashik will each see nine new English-medium schools.
In Amravati, eight new schools will be established, including two Marathi-medium schools, while Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will get seven new schools, of which two will have Marathi as the medium of instruction. Kolhapur is set to receive six new schools, with three Marathi-medium schools, whereas Latur will see the addition of five new English-medium schools.
Out of the 73 new schools, 60 will follow the Maharashtra State Board curriculum. Eleven will be affiliated with the CBSE board, while one each will be under the ICSE and Cambridge boards.
