Centre discloses ED data: 193 cases in 10 years, only 2 convictions

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 20: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered 193 cases against political leaders over the past 10 years, but only two have resulted in convictions, the ministry of finance and revenue informed parliament recently.

Minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared this data in response to a query from Kerala MP AA Rahim. The cases include those against sitting and former MPs, MLAs, MLCs, and individuals linked to political parties.

The highest number of cases—32—were filed between April 2022 and March 2023. However, despite the large number of cases, the minister confirmed that there have been no acquittals so far.

When asked for a breakdown of cases based on political party and state, the minister stated that such data is not maintained. He also did not provide specific information regarding allegations that opposition leaders were being targeted.

Regarding concerns over a potential rise in cases against opposition leaders, the government clarified that ED investigations are based on credible evidence and are not influenced by political affiliation, religion, or any other factor. The ministry emphasized that all ED actions are subject to judicial review.

The revelation has sparked discussions about the effectiveness and impartiality of the ED’s investigations, particularly in cases involving political figures.
