Mangaluru, Mar 21: The department of history at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) hosted ‘INSPIRE – Chapter 4,’ on March 20 a flagship programme that provides a platform for individuals who have been catalysts for change in society. The distinguished guest for the event was Terence Andrade, currently based in Silicon Valley, USA. He is the son of William Andrade, an early migrant from Mangaluru to Karachi, Pakistan, in the early 1940s.
Born in Karachi, Terence Andrade had an exceptional academic journey at St Patrick’s High School & College, Karachi, where he studied from 1956 to 1968. A passionate hockey player, he was selected for the NED College team upon joining and went on to lead the team to numerous college and university championships. In 1971, he secured a place on the Karachi University degree colleges team for the All-Pakistan inter-university hockey championships.

He later pursued a degree in electrical engineering at NED College (now a university), graduating in 1973, before completing his MS in electrical & computer engineering at Oregon State University. With multiple job offers from leading Silicon Valley companies, he chose to join AMD in 1979. Over the course of his career, he worked in product and test engineering for four years before transitioning into leadership roles in test operations, production, and engineering teams across Asia and Europe. He played a pivotal role in AMD’s microprocessor development, contributing to eight generations of processors, and was instrumental in scaling high-volume production operations globally.
Addressing the students, he shared how his experiences growing up in Pakistan helped him recognize his talents and provided a nurturing environment for building friendships. He also expressed his disappointment with how the media perpetuates division and hatred among communities for political gain. Encouraging students to embrace and appreciate the shared cultural and civilizational heritage, he emphasized the importance of unity.
The event was organized under the leadership of Dr Mona Mendonca, head of the department of history, and was attended by Dr Alwyn D’Sa, registrar (SAC), Dr Charles Furtado, director of the Admin block, and Kishore Chandra, assistant professor in the department of history. More than 90 students participated in the event and engaged in an interactive session.
