Mapusa, Mar 22: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has initiated an inquiry into claims of illegal landfilling in a paddy field at Corjuem-Aldona, following a formal complaint lodged by former panchayat member Thomas Tavares.
A team of three GCZMA officials, including an expert, conducted a thorough inspection of the site in Corjuem on Friday and is expected to present a comprehensive report soon.
The inquiry stems from Tavares’ complaint, which highlights large-scale landfilling activities in Survey No. 193/1, a site classified as a paddy field under the Regional Plan 2021. This land is situated near the Mapusa Tar River.

Tavares asserts that the area has been completely filled with debris and mud, in violation of the Goa Land Regulation Act and the Goa Land Revenue Code. He expressed concerns over the environmental impact, stating that the unauthorized dumping not only breaches environmental regulations but also disrupts the region's ecological balance.
In his complaint addressed to the District Collector, GCZMA, and other authorities, Tavares stressed that the landfilling activities have led to the destruction of mangroves, which play a critical role in preventing coastal erosion and supporting marine life.
Furthermore, Tavares pointed out that the illegal filling of the area contravenes Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, with the burial of mangroves constituting a serious environmental offense.
While the complaint does not specify the individuals responsible for the illegal landfilling, there are indications that a local panchayat staff member may be involved in the unauthorized activities. Investigations are ongoing to assess the full extent of the violations and to identify those responsible for the alleged encroachment.
