Mangaluru, Mar 25: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna and Beltangady MLA Harish Poonja visited Mangaluru Jail on Tuesday and met the five individuals arrested in connection with the assault on a Dalit woman over alleged fish theft in Udupi.

The legislators interacted with the accused regarding the case. Speaking to reporters after the visit, Yashpal Suvarna alleged that the police department in the coastal districts was being used as a Congress party office.

"Injustice against hardworking people will not be tolerated. Women, like men, risk their lives and engage equally in the fishing profession. However, the way the police have handled this case is unacceptable. If they do not correct their behavior, they will face consequences," he warned.

"As an MLA and a fisherman, I stand with them. The Congress has no achievements to show in Udupi and Mangaluru, which is why they are using officials to file false cases. In the coming days, we will demonstrate the strength of our workers," he asserted.

The behaviour and actions of these MLAs is reprehensible. It is clearly a ploy to win the votes of the community to which the accused belongs to. The shameless action of these good for nothing MLAs should be condemned by all right thinking individuals. The people are to blame for electing such persons. It clearly shows they are not on the side of the lady who was stripped and beaten.

An MLA should stand for justice and equality, without any bias. When an atrocity is committed against a woman, it is unacceptable for an MLA to support the accused. The way the accused tortured the victim is beyond justification. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. Publicly shaming someone and stripping them of their dignity is never justifiable. Mob justice has no place in India. Regardless of who the victim is, this incident should serve as a lesson for anyone involved in such unlawful actions.
