Ranchi, Apr 1: The celebration of Sarhul, the festival symbolizing the sacred bond between earth and sun, is in full swing across Jharkhand, with nature-worshipping tribal communities observing the occasion with fervor.
Processions featuring traditional music, dance, and vibrant flags are filling the streets of Ranchi and other parts of the state. Thousands of men, women, and children are participating in the celebrations, proudly upholding their Sarna religious traditions.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren joined the main festivities at Ranchi’s tribal hostel and Sarna Sthal in Siram Toli, while former CM Champai Soren and other leaders, including Ranchi MLA C P Singh and AJSU Party chief Sudesh Mahto, also took part in the rituals.
Sharing glimpses of the festival on social media, CM Soren greeted the people, saying, “Johar! Many congratulations and best wishes on Sarhul, the grand festival of nature. Let us preserve and strengthen our rich traditions for the next 25 years and beyond.” He also announced an additional holiday on Wednesday, extending the government break beyond Tuesday.
Sarhul, deeply rooted in tribal folklore, is believed to mark the ‘marriage’ of earth and sun. As per tradition, the sun proposes to the earth with its warmth, leading to a season of prosperity. The village priest (Pahan) adorns the earth with Sal flowers before handing it over to the sun, symbolizing the sacred union.
Folk tales also form an integral part of the festival, with the Oraon community revering the story of the crab and fish, believed to have played a role in the creation of the earth. Additionally, the Chief Pahan in Ranchi’s Hatma village predicted lower-than-normal rainfall this year based on traditional water-level rituals.
The joyous festival continues to reinforce the deep connection between Jharkhand’s tribal communities and nature, keeping their centuries-old traditions alive.
