Panaji, Apr 4: In a contempt petition related to rampant illegal sand mining in Goa, the High Court has directed the North Goa Collector to issue a show cause notice to the Bicholim Mamlatdar for failing to act on a report submitted by the Sankhali Talathi.

The report highlighted illegal sand extraction activities occurring at Virdi, along the river Valvanti. Despite being notified, the Bicholim Mamlatdar allegedly did not take prompt action, prompting the High Court’s intervention.

Sources indicate that the High Court expressed displeasure over the inaction, stressing the need for immediate measures to curb illegal sand mining, which has been a persistent issue in the region.

The court has instructed the North Goa Collector to seek an explanation from the Bicholim Mamlatdar and submit a detailed report during the next hearing scheduled for April 29.

Environmental activists have consistently raised concerns over unchecked sand extraction in the state, citing its harmful effects on river ecosystems and local livelihoods. The High Court’s strong stance is seen as a step towards ensuring accountability and adherence to environmental regulations.
