New Delhi, Apr 8: A 17-year-old girl, just a day away from celebrating her 18th birthday, is battling for her life after being brutally attacked by a 20-year-old youth in Delhi's Cantonment area. The incident, which unfolded in full public view near the Kirbi Place bus stop on Sunday night, has sent shockwaves across the city.
According to police sources, the accused, identified as Amit, reportedly stabbed the minor multiple times in the neck and abdomen with a knife after she rejected his marriage proposal. Unable to accept the refusal, he then attempted to end his own life by stabbing himself.

The horrific scene, captured by bystanders on mobile phones, shows the bloodied couple lying on the footpath, drawing attention from commuters who quickly rushed to their aid. The video, though unverified, has gone viral on social media, adding to the public outrage.
DCP (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary confirmed that the police received a distress call around 9:30 pm. “Both the accused and the victim were shifted to the hospital immediately. The girl sustained critical injuries to her neck and abdomen. A knife was recovered from the scene,” he said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Amit and the girl had known each other for a year. The two had reportedly fallen out recently, following her refusal to marry him — a rejection that seemingly pushed the accused to commit the heinous act.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Amit, and further investigations are underway.
The incident has devastated the victim’s family, particularly her mother, who is a single parent. "She was supposed to turn 18 today. We were looking forward to her birthday, but now my child is fighting for every breath," said her heartbroken mother, Meena (name changed), who works as a domestic help.
“She had so many dreams — she was attending coaching classes, working hard to land a job and support me,” the grieving mother said, recalling how the duo had moved to Delhi from a village in Uttar Pradesh after her husband left them years ago.
Meena’s employer, who has stood by her side since the incident, demanded justice for the young girl. “Just because a girl speaks to someone, does that give him the right to take her life away? We will not stay silent. We will ensure she gets justice,” she said.
The girl remains on ventilator support, her condition said to be critical. The case has once again brought to light the disturbing rise in crimes of obsession and passion targeting women, igniting widespread calls for stronger safeguards and accountability.
