Panaji, Apr 10: In a proud moment for the Goan community, more than 60 Goans residing in the United Kingdom were honoured at a special recognition event held at the iconic Palace of Westminster on Tuesday. The event, titled ‘Recognition of the UK Goan Diaspora’, celebrated the achievements and contributions of Goans across diverse professional fields.
The event was jointly organised by Swindon labour MPs Heidi Alexander and Will Stone, along with Imtiaz Shaikh, the first-ever Goan Mayor of Swindon, and his wife Adorabelle Shaikh, a councillor and cabinet member for education.
Goans from across the UK—including regions like Swindon, Wembley, Southall, Hayes, and other parts of London—were acknowledged for their exemplary service in the armed forces, healthcare, engineering, police, business, corporate leadership, and the hospitality industry.
Speaking on the occasion, Cllr Adorabelle Shaikh stated, “History was created at the Palace of Westminster by recognising the UK Goan community and their tremendous contributions. Goans have made the UK their home and are an integral part of its rich and diverse cultural fabric.”
MP Heidi Alexander expressed admiration for the community’s resilience and success, remarking, “As the Member of Parliament for Swindon, I know the vital role the Goan diaspora plays in shaping our country’s economic and cultural life.”
The event served not just as a celebration of achievements but also as a reminder of the strong and growing presence of the Goan diaspora in the UK, further strengthening cultural ties between Goa and the United Kingdom.
It was a proud occasion that reinforced the spirit of community, diversity, and the far-reaching impact of Goans making a difference on global soil.
